Leaving the Nest

Days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Whether you are an experienced alpinist or a beginning mountaineer, the benefits of the light & fast approach are indisputable.

  • Being lighter means using less energy with every step we take and more comfortable when we are in motion.
  • This clinic covers the most important aspects of the light & fast approach, moving in the mountains and multi-pitch climbing.
  • This is an advanced-level clinic. A high level of fitness and comfort on WI4 ice is required.
  • Participants will attend a zoom call prior to clinic to go over syllabus 

Note: participants will NOT be leading. All students will be on a top rope.

Anchors and Rescue: Staying on and Getting Off the Wall

Days: Sunday

What do you do when things hit the fan? The ability to self-rescue on ice is incredibly important due to environmental factors. Anchor masterclass, from pure ice to mixed anchors, and how to deal with difficult anchor situations.

The Sharp End: Becoming a Confident Leader

Days: Friday, Saturday

Get ready to take the lead. Climbing on “the sharp end” is a huge step in an ice climber’s growth arc, and we’re here to help you make the leap with safety and confidence. In this clinic, you’ll transition to leading with top rope support, and will get the chance to lead an ice pitch at your comfort level. Screws and anchors are provided and/or pre-placed depending on the climb.

Technical Ski Alpinism

Days: Friday, Saturday

Climbing ice with skis on your back? Skiing with ice tools? Whichever way you look at it, you need the full toolkit at your disposal to take on big alpine goals featuring technical climbing and steep skiing. In this clinic, you’ll improve your technique, hone your systems, and expand your mind to take on new multi-modal objectives.

This clinic will largely focus on climbing techniques and systems, but ski alpinism gear will be utilized to achieve the climbing goals. Become confident climbing technical ice and mixed with ski boots on your feet and skis on your back, learn how to select gear and narrow down your pack for efficient and safe travel, and form a competency with ideating, planning, and executing climb+ski objectives of all sizes.

*Due to the early season nature of the snowpack, we will not be skiing technical objectives during this clinic.*

Qualifications

  • Clinic participants should be confident climbers and skiers. We suggest competence leading WI3, following WI4-5, and skiing steep, technical pitches on variable snow. 
  • Participants should be familiar with rope work, rappelling, belaying, and efficient ski-to-climb transitions.
  • Mandatory certification in AIRE level 1 snow safety or similar. 
  • This is NOT an entry-level clinic. Please do not register unless you are a confident backcountry skier and ice climber. 

Required Equipment

Equipment will be discussed on the pre call, but the basic idea is to pack as if you were going out for a long ski tour to an ice climb. You will climb in your ski boots and affix your skis + poles to your pack. Ounces become pounds – discerning weight reductions will be a key focus of this clinic. 

  • Lightweight backcountry skis equipped with AT Bindings. Ideally ~1500g or less for the setup. 
  • Climbing skins
  • Basic avalanche equipment 
    • Beacon

    • Probe
  • ~1000g ski touring boots. We like the Scarpa F1LT. Walk mode mandatory. 
  • Helmet
  • Ski-carry compatible pack. MANDATORY.

  • Technical ice tools for up to WI5/M6
  • Technical Crampons for up to WI5/M6 + Steep Snow
  • Climbing / skiing layers

The Western Double - Climb & Snowmobile

Get the full Western experience with this 2-day clinic: 1 day ice climbing, and 1 day ripping a snowmobile around the Beartooth mountains with Beartooth Rides and Guides. This clinic, provided by Beartooth Rides and Guides, is designed for the beginner snowmobiler who has little to no experience riding a snowmobile in the backcountry. All avalanche safety gear will be provided. Rogers Sports Center will provide you a snowmobile that will be friendly to your ability and progression. The ice climbing will be at an intermediate level.

Beginner Skills Checklist

  • Learning and practicing proper body position and footwork 
  • Basic avalanche safety (Avalanche gear check, understanding and using an avalanche report, communication, snow observation and awareness, Etc.)
  • Basic terrain navigation and awareness
  • Throttle control on groomed trails and off trail
  • Sled Control- steering and turning on the groomed trails
  • Introduction to carving in powder, counter-steering
  • How to get unstuck- throttle control, packing snow, rolling a sled, ski-pulling, when to shovel

Cancellation Policy

We do not offer refunds, but we will gladly defer your clinics to the following year if you have a life circumstance or injury that prevents you from attending. Please email us prior to 12/20/24 for deferrals.
